Rule of thumb: one cubic yard of mulch covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep. Three inches is the sweet spot for most beds — enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture without smothering roots.
Bulk is cheaper once you need more than ~10 bags. Check if the yard delivers or if you need to trailer it yourself. Bark costs more than wood chips; arborist chips are often free if you call around.
