Fridge: the only method with a safe resting window. Figure roughly 24 hours per 5 pounds. Once thawed, beef and pork keep 3β5 days; poultry and ground meats 1β2 days.
Cold water: submerge in the original sealed package. Change the water every 30 minutes so it stays below 40Β°F. Cook immediately after thawing β do not refreeze raw.
Microwave defrost: fine for small cuts, but parts often start to cook. Use only if you are cooking right away.
Never thaw at room temperature. Above 40Β°F, bacteria on the surface multiply fast β this is a food-safety rule, not a preference. USDA guidance, not medical advice.
Fridge: 4β5 h per lb (β 24 h per 5 lb)
Cold water: 30 min per lb, water swapped every 30 min
Microwave: 6β8 min per lb on defrost
